This Christmas, Affinity for Business will be donating to three different charities throughout December, The Zion Food Bank, The Mixed Group and Crisis – all of which are charities that are close to our hearts.
One of the charities we have been working closely with is Crisis, who contribute to ending homelessness in Britain. Homelessness is an issue that is rising in England, in fact, the latest figures show that 4,751 people slept rough on any given night in 2017, which is a 15% increase compared to the previous year. We all deserve to have a safe and stable place to live. Therefore, Affinity for Business has become an official collection point for Crisis this December, this means anyone is welcome to pop into our office located in Welwyn Garden City and donate items into our collection boxes (and have a cup of tea if you fancy!). Our team and the public will be contributing a Christmas wish list containing items such as bedding, clothes, arts and craft materials, toiletries and books for those in need.
To raise awareness, we asked Sheila from Crisis to discuss their cause, in the hope of informing the local community of what they can do to help!
Can you tell us a bit about Crisis and how the charity came about?
Crisis was founded in 1967, amidst growing realisation of the extent of the homelessness crisis across the UK. The charity was formed as an urgent response to the growing homelessness crisis and since then we have helped tens of thousands of people out of homelessness and campaigned for change.
What does ending homelessness in Britain mean to Crisis?
Ending homelessness means understanding the causes, finding practical solutions for individuals, and building the political will to solve it for everyone for good.
How can businesses get involved to help end homelessness?
Fundraising at work is a great way to have fun with colleagues while raising vital funds to help end homelessness. This could be through donations, campaigning, fundraising or volunteering – these generous actions all make a difference to help end homelessness.
Being homeless can have damaging effects on your mental and physical health – do you provide any support for those that are homeless or have previously been homeless?
Every year we work with thousands of people to help them rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind for good. How we can help depends on someone’s needs and situation.
One of our friendly experts will spend the time to work out what they need, for example:
- Finding them a home and helping them settle in
- Offering training for the skills needed to find a job
- Improving their health and wellbeing
